If you are an avid user of social media, you probably know Osas and her “ is this a safe space?’’ phrase, A while back, I sat down to think, “what exactly is a safe space and am I a safe space?’’. Of course when you go looking for answers, you will find it , in the past few weeks, I have found my answer. Is it pleasant? Did I like the answers I got? You will have to stick me to find out.
In Secondary school, I always started my essays with definition of key words and since I have not written an essay in a long time, I am going to use that format, stick with me please.
According to Oxford Dictionary, a safe space is a place or environment in which a person or category of people can feel confident that they will not be exposed to discrimination, criticism, harassment and any other emotional or physical harm.
To me, safe spaces are more than just a place, it can be a person, it can be a group of people. Safe safes emerge from genuine connection, compatibility, shared interest, a person you can be delusional with and share your true thoughts.
Being a Nigerian living in Nigeria can be tough and overwhelming, hence why is it important to have someone to talk to, and to be someone to talk to. It is being a listening ear to your sister when she calls you by 1pm to tell you that her car stopped on the road, it is loving your friends and partner in their love language ; being a walking reminder for that particular friend who forgets to eat and another reminder for that one who is always eating, to drink water and sleep, ; being a torn in your brother’s flesh by texting him early in the morning to go to the gym.It is having a friend who won’t judge you for making bad decisions but at the same time won’t let you slack ; it is being a hypeman for that person that calls you before leaving the house to go out and telling them that the reason rain was falling is because the sun could not compete with their hotness.
At the end of the day, it is all in the little moments of life.
On finding out if I am a safe space; I’d like to think so.
Did I conduct research or survey ? No.
Did I just jump to conclusions? Yes I did.
Is this conclusion however rebuttable ? No.
Love,
Your Friend,
Ink and Lens.
Do you have a safe space? tell me about it.
Yes, I do. A friend 🫶
Way to go, now I'm stuck wondering if I am a safe space 😅
